The staunchly independent region of Cataluña, situated towards the Pyrenees with the Med at its coastline, is a popular tourist destination in Spain. With its own regionalism and unique features, Catalan dialects and local specialties, it is an area of much interest. With over 6,000,000 people living in the region, it is a strong force within the Kingdom of Spain. It also boasts many of Spain’s most important cities and tourist destinations, some of which are listed below.

Barcelona

The city is the regions capital and up there with Madrid in terms of influence and economy. It has a well developed commercial harbor which is essential to the Spanish economy and is one of the greatest on the Med. In the old town, there are some wonderful historical monuments and buildings, as well as great architecture. In the Barri Gothic you can find a cathedral, old churches and palaces, and ancient remains from Roman times.

Areas of the city have special UNESCO world heritage status, including many of Gaudi’s works (such as the Sagrada Familia or Park Guell). The city is has many splendid museums and art galleries, reflecting local artists and works from around Spain and beyond.

The city is an important city break destination and welcomes tourists from all walks of life. Stag and Hen dos are becoming more popular here, and cruise passengers disembark their ships at the nearby port for a quick tour of the city. The resorts up and down the nearby coast welcome families for day trips and the Spanish too like to visit this important city.

Other areas of interest

One such resort in the region is the luxury villas spain which boasts beautiful beaches along the coast. The area has a rugged beauty and is popular for water sports and other activities. There are some well developed resorts and some equally unspoiled areas of traditional villages. Some, like l’Escala, have developed into commercial areas surrounding what was once a traditional fishing village.

Some interesting sites in the area include Empuries, near L’Escala. Here you’ll find some interesting roman ruins that have been actively turned into a tourist attraction with restaurants and bars. The city of Girona has a very pretty old town, and the famous Costa Dorada boasts more than one great sandy beach, big resorts and excellent night life.

Head to Tarragona for some interesting historical sites, and to Sitges which boast galleries and interesting artefacts housed in the many public buildings. A visit to a local museum is a must here, as well as some of the great restaurants and cafes.
